Emerald: The Pantone Color of 2013

Remember when you went to the dentist as a kid? It was so fun because you got to skip school, get a new shiny toothbrush, have McDonalds with you mom afterwards, and choose a toy from the toy bin for not crying. Maybe your experience was a little different than mine, but I L-O-V-E my dentist and his office. I still go see them as an adult and now my husband is a patient there as well! Anyway, back to the toy from the toy bin! Often, I chose the styrofoam airplanes you could put together or a few stickers but what I really always wanted was one of those awesome toy rings that looked like these below.

The unfortunate story goes like this: I love my sister Melissa and she is my best friend. Melissa was born in April and I was born in May. April's birthstone is a diamond and May's birthstone is an emerald. Melissa would get her diamond, adjustable, toy ring at the dentist and I would select the other option of my choice for that visit because I was ashamed of my birthstone. I would sometimes grab those of different months and hues, but Melissa's voice would ring in my ears that I couldn't have that one because it wasn't from the month I was born. Enter another toy plane...

Who can compete with a diamond? I am a sucker for diamonds, ask my husband. I have been fully conditioned to thinking that they are the best things ever {and had all my morals dashed by watching Blood Diamond} but I still love them. I don't love emerald as a stone, but my passion has broke forth for it as a color.

Emerald is: the color of Ariel's tail in The Little Mermaid, the color green I chose for my wedding, the color of recycled glass, alligators, broccoli, and a chrysalis. Emerald is the color most favored in The Wizard of Oz. It makes you feel peaceful, energized and refreshed. Emerald is a beautiful hue, and this year Pantone selected it as the color of the year for 2013.

So here is to all things emerald in my life and yours.

1. A ring unlike the faux ones of my youth: Green and gold always look stunning together. I would rock that emerald baby everyday!

2. Emerald eye makeup: Kendra Stanton of Citizens of Beauty did this look on me on New Year's Eve to ring in 2013 in Pantone fashion. Check out her post here.

3. Turtle Green Nail Polish: this hue is another shout out to Melissa; to the endless hours we spent painting our finger nails and your undying love for turtles. {Oh how I am laughing so loudly right now}

4. Nike Miler Running Top: I got this top a gift from my mother who knows I have an enduring affection for all things green. It fits so nicely I never want to change! Here is to a year of healthy runs in 2013!

5. Smoking Slippers: I do not smoke but I do love how these slippers look and feel on. I need to wear a flatter shoe now {yawn how boring} since my injury in August so I have been looking for fun flats. These take the cake! Add an energizing pop of color to your look with emerald green shoes!

And remember: Rock it till you love it!

Who first beholds the light of day
In spring's sweet flowery month of May
And wears an emerald all her life
Shall be a loved and happy wife.
